Rafael Contreras Soldevilla was the founder of D’Accord. He passed away April 7, 2006. He was born December 8, 1914 in Madrid, Spain. At the age of four years old, his father died and my grandmother had to send my father to a school for orphan children.
A few years later, his grandfather settled in Havana. My grandmother migrated with the children to Cuba. At age 13, my father began doing business to support the family. His first job was in a hat shop, shaping the hats that priests wore. Later he worked in retail stores. As an enterprising young man of 16, my father began his own business by buying and selling mens suits in Havana. At the age of 21 my father founded Cancha and became one of the most exclusive men’s stores in Cuba. Between the 1930's and 1950’s, Cancha was visited by international dignitaries, sports figures and artists.
In 1959, communism and Castro seized Cancha and Cuba suffered. Being forced to leave everything behind, our family exiled to America, to begin our new lives in the 1960's. In 1964 my father founded a men’s wear manufacturing company, D’Gala. In 1980 my father commenced D’Accord, and I have kept up my father's work ethic and traditions since. My father is greatly missed.
